Ringling College of Art and Design (RCAD) has a Graphic Design Program that launched in 1980.
Students begin the program “by learning to use the basic principles of design and design thinking, and progress to learn image making, color theory and typography as they create a wide variety of visual communications,” says the school. The 60 credit hour MFA program allow students to pursue creative work in Graphic Design, Illustration, Interactive Media, Paper and Book Arts, Printmaking, and more. Students will participate in opportunities “unique to MCAD’s MFA program” at art galleries, art centers, and nonprofits, designed to position students for success post-graduation. Most credits in the program are earned through one-on-one work with a faculty mentor who is an expert in the students chosen field. Optional internships are part of the program as well as a capstone thesis exhibition and paper in the final year. Students in the 120 credit hour BFA program “will develop their own voice and produce original work, they will research, engage with, and create innovative concepts, content, and form, and learn to communicate ideas visually,” says the school.
Marketing specialists create promotional content, including print advertisements, digital videos, and social media posts. They also research consumer demand, analyzing sales and other data to determine how to market a product or service effectively. According to Payscale, graphic designers earned an average annual salary of $50,530 as of December 2023. Web designers made slightly more, earning an average income of $55,510 per year, as did marketing specialists ($56,100 per year). In general, BA programs include more liberal arts courses than either BS or BFA programs.
Rochester Institute of Technology is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Dating back to 1829, the school serves more than 19,000 students, making it one of the largest private universities in the U.S. With additional campuses in China, Croatia, Dubai, and Kosovo, RIT offers more than 200 academic programs across 11 colleges and institutes. They hold titles such as Graphic Designer, Art Director, Data Visualization Strategist, Interactive Designer, Creative Director, User Experience Designer, and Web Designer, among others. The Graphic Design BFA explores areas such as typography, data visualization, digital drawing, color theory, hand-drawing, and web design.
The school, which houses more than 145 departments and schools, is home to one of the most prestigious fine arts schools in the U.S. The core BFA curriculum “builds a range of analytical, formal, sensory and technical design experiences. To apply, you need a GED certificate or a high school diploma with a GPA of 2.0 or higher. If you have fewer than 24 transferable credits, you also need an ACT score of 19 or better. Admission requires a high school diploma with acceptable college preparation coursework or a high school equivalency test with qualifying scores. To apply, you must submit high school and college transcripts but do not have to send SAT or ACT scores. The University of Houston (UH) is home the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts. Within the McGovern College is the School of Art, which offers a BFA in Graphic Design and an MFA in Studio Art.
